On some projects on itch.io you can decide to download for free or purchase the game:
SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics on SteamĮven new games are developed for old platforms and sold. You can buy them and extract the ROMs and play on any emulator you like. Old games are still being sold by their publishers and made playable through emulators too. Even free licensed ROMs may have some extra rules and notes about the rights to distribute further. There are many grey areas and misunderstood clear topics, which can vary depending where you live. Make sure to check it out, as it contains more information than I provided at this place.Īnd by the way, just because you own a cartridge (or disk for that matter) does not give you rights to download ROMs, because the ROMs are dumps of different cartridges and disks and are shared illegally. This post is inspired by a post in RetroPie forum (not by me): Where to (legally) acquire content to play on RetroPie. Below is a non exhaustive list of sources to get ROMs legally. We don't support piracy and it is out of question to discuss it. 
There are legal ways to obtain ROMs and there are illegal ways.
If you are new to RetroArch or the emulation scene, then you might want get some games to play on the emulators. Rule number 1: Sharing links to piracy sources and discussion is not tolerated in this sub.
